Nigerian Senate orders DSS to track bandits flaunting wealth on social media
The Nigerian Senate has issued a strong directive to the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force to immediately track and arrest bandits flaunting wealth on social media.

Lawmakers expressed deep concern over the growing trend of criminal groups operating openly online, displaying proceeds of crime without fear of arrest.

The upper chamber warned that this unchecked digital audacity poses a severe threat to national security and undermines public confidence in the state’s authority.

The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Sunday Karimi (Kogi West) regarding the escalating wave of terrorist attacks and kidnappings in his district, including a tragic assault on a secondary school in Iluke-Bunu that claimed the lives of a vice principal and a teacher.

During the debate, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) stunned the floor by revealing how these criminal elements leverage digital networks.

She alleged that suspected terrorists recently conducted a live giveaway on TikTok, distributing over N100 million within just 30 minutes.

She argued that these brazen online displays provide security agencies with clear digital footprints to apprehend the perpetrators, noting that these suspects literally "live on their social media handles."

Senate President Godswill Akpabio strongly condemned the digital impunity, describing the online display of cash as a direct challenge to the government.

He emphasized that the Senate expects immediate results from the DSS and the Police Cybercrime Unit, warning that authorities will be held accountable if individuals openly revealing their identities online are not swiftly apprehended.

Beyond tracking bandits flaunting wealth on social media, the Senate adopted additional resolutions to curb the country's worsening security situation.

Lawmakers called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to establish a legal framework for state police, urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to tighten cashless policies to block ransom payments, and advised state governments against negotiating peace agreements with armed groups.
