Somali referee Omar Artan has been appointed to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup after missing the FIFA World Cup due to entry issues in the United States.

The appointment comes as a major boost for the highly rated official, who was previously set to become the first Somali referee to officiate at a World Cup.

Artan, who was recognized as Africa’s best male referee in 2025, had been on course to become the first referee from Somalia to officiate at a FIFA World Cup.

However, his hopes were dashed after he was reportedly denied entry into the United States despite traveling with a diplomatic passport.

The incident sparked widespread debate and criticism from football fans and observers around the world.

Upon his return to Somalia, Artan received a warm reception from supporters who praised his achievements and contributions to African football.

In a move widely welcomed by the football community, UEFA announced that Artan will take charge of the 2026 UEFA Super Cup between Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain.

Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain will compete for the prestigious European trophy, with Artan serving as the match official.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin praised Artan’s abilities, describing him as an outstanding referee who has consistently demonstrated excellence at the highest levels of African football.
