Nollywood actor IK Ogbonna has opened up about the emotional pain of losing his close friend and colleague, Alex Ekubo, saying grief continues to follow him even months after the actor's death.
In an emotional Instagram post shared on Tuesday, IK Ogbonna revealed that he still instinctively reaches for his phone to call Alex Ekubo before remembering that his longtime friend is no longer alive.
According to the actor, losing someone so close completely changed his understanding of life, friendship and death.
"On May 11th, I lost my best friend and brother, Alexx. Nothing prepares you for a loss like that," he wrote.
Alex Ekubo reportedly passed away after spending hours on life support at Evercare Hospital in Lagos due to complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
Reflecting on the tragedy, IK Ogbonna said people never truly understand the weight of death until it affects someone they deeply love.
He explained that the silence left behind after losing a loved one is difficult to describe, adding that conversations they once planned to continue have now become treasured memories.
The actor revealed that he and Alex Ekubo shared many dreams, including building businesses, producing movies, travelling the world and raising their families together.
According to him, they believed they had plenty of time to achieve those dreams, never imagining that one of them would leave so soon.
Despite the pain, Ogbonna said his faith has helped him accept that God's plans are greater than human understanding, even when answers remain difficult to find.
