A Nigerian woman has shared an emotional account of how her father's consistent support throughout her upbringing helped build her confidence, self-esteem, and standards in relationships, sparking widespread reactions online.
According to her, many people believed she was her father's favourite because he quickly responded to all her needs. However, she said her father explained that his actions were not about favouritism but about protecting her as a daughter.
She recalled that her father told her brothers that young women are often manipulated with material gifts, and he wanted to ensure she never lacked the basic things that could make her vulnerable to exploitation.
The woman revealed that until she got married, she never paid for airtime on her two mobile phones. Every Friday, her father recharged both lines with ₦1,500 after she simply sent him a reminder.
She also shared that her father regularly bought her clothes, especially jeans, while advising her against wearing skirts to night classes or walking through dark areas alone. She added that he even had a better eye for buying undergarments than her mother, making him her preferred shopping companion.
Reflecting on her school years, she recounted rejecting a man who tried to impress her with a laptop in 2009 because her father had already bought her one in 2006 after she passed her WAEC examinations in one sitting.
According to her, receiving a laptop for passing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination in one sitting had become an unspoken family tradition.
She explained that her father's dedication to meeting her needs gave her high self-esteem and taught her never to tolerate disrespect in relationships.
The woman said she ended several relationships at the slightest sign of disrespect because she had learned to value herself and refuse treatment that fell below the standard set by her upbringing.
Now married for 12 years, she admitted that she still finds it easier to ask her father and siblings for assistance than to make similar requests from her husband, describing it as a habit rooted in her upbringing.
She concluded by encouraging fathers to do more to provide for and support their families, arguing that many young women are forced to become independent too early because they lack reliable parental support.
