The House of Representatives constitutional amendment bills are set to take center stage as lawmakers prepare to vote on 37 major proposals aimed at reshaping key aspects of Nigeria’s governance, electoral system, judiciary, security architecture, local government administration and citizens’ rights.

The proposed amendments cover a wide range of issues, including the establishment of state police, independent candidacy in elections, the creation of an Electoral Offences Commission, judicial reforms, local government autonomy and increased transparency in public administration.

Among the most closely watched proposals is the bill seeking to establish state police across Nigeria. Supporters argue that decentralizing policing could improve security and strengthen local responses to crime and insecurity.

Another significant proposal seeks to allow independent candidates to contest presidential, governorship, legislative and local government elections without belonging to a political party, subject to specific requirements and verification by electoral authorities.

The House of Representatives constitutional amendment bills also include measures to strengthen electoral accountability through the establishment of an Electoral Offences Commission tasked with investigating and prosecuting election-related crimes.

Several judicial reforms are also under consideration. These include reducing the workload of the Supreme Court, setting timelines for the disposal of appeals and allowing elevated judges to conclude criminal cases they previously handled before promotion.

On local government administration, lawmakers will consider proposals granting constitutional recognition to local governments as a full tier of government, alongside measures aimed at improving accountability, auditing and financial oversight.

Other notable bills focus on citizenship rights, additional legislative representation for women, child protection, environmental rights, transparency in government spending and the recognition of traditional institutions within the constitutional framework.

The House of Representatives constitutional amendment bills represent one of the most comprehensive constitutional review exercises in recent years. If approved by the National Assembly and subsequently endorsed through the constitutional amendment process, the proposals could significantly alter Nigeria’s political and governance landscape.

The outcome of the vote is expected to attract nationwide attention, particularly on key issues such as state police, electoral reforms, local government autonomy and expanded constitutional rights.
