The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following credible intelligence reports of a planned kidnap attack targeting students.

The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.

The directive was issued after security agencies reportedly alerted the government to threats against educational institutions in the area.

According to a circular signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Ministry of Education, Enodolomwanyi Otamere, the decision was based on security advisories received from relevant agencies, including intelligence reports warning of potential attacks on students and school communities.

The ministry stated that all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools have been suspended indefinitely as a precautionary measure to protect lives and property.

Despite the closure, candidates currently participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) will continue to sit for their examinations under enhanced security arrangements.

Authorities said security agencies and community stakeholders would work together to ensure the safety of examination candidates. .

School principals have been directed to oversee the safe release of students to their parents and guardians, secure school facilities, and maintain close communication with education authorities and security personnel.

The Edo State Government also appealed to parents and residents to remain calm while security agencies intensify efforts to neutralize any potential threat and restore normal academic activities as soon as possible.

The development comes amid growing concerns over increasing attacks on schools across Nigeria. In recent weeks, several incidents involving the abduction of students and teachers have been reported in different states, prompting calls for stronger security measures around educational institutions.

Authorities have reassured residents that the temporary closure is a preventive action aimed at protecting children and preventing any security breach while investigations and security operations continue.
