Australia stuns Turkey 2-0 in their opening group stage match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Socceroos pulled off a spectacular football shockwave on Saturday as Australia stuns Turkey with an emphatic 2-0 upset in their opening Group D fixture of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Braces on paper turned into a masterclass on the pitch at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium, courtesy of goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe, while a heroic performance from rookie goalkeeper Patrick Beach vindicated a high-stakes selection strategy.

Before the match even kicked off, Australia head coach Tony Popovic raised eyebrows across the global football community by completely benching long-serving captain and veteran goalkeeper Maty Ryan in favor of Beach, who was earning just his third international cap.

Popovic further shook up the lineup by benching vice-captain Jackson Irvine to give 21-year-old Paul Okon-Engstler the nod in a highly experimental starting eleven that featured a staggering 10 World Cup debutants.

The daring selection experiment turned out to be pure tactical genius. Turkey—making their highly anticipated return to the World Cup stage for the first time since their legendary third-place finish in 2002—controlled the tempo, territory, and possession but continually hit an absolute brick wall in Patrick Beach.

The young shot-stopper single-handedly kept the Turkish star-studded attack at bay, notably pulling off a spectacular diving save in the 27th minute to deny a rasping, goal-bound effort from Real Madrid wunderkind Arda Güler.

Just seconds after that defensive escape, Australia stuns Turkey by drawing first blood. Deep inside the Australian territory, Beach distributed a pass to Okon-Engstler, who immediately launched a spectacular, defense-splitting long ball down the wing.

Prodigious forward Nestory Irankunda timed his run flawlessly, controlled the ball on his first touch to bypass the Turkish backline, and slotted a composed, low strike past the keeper.

The teenager immediately celebrated by sprinting to the edge of the pitch and mock-boxing the corner flag—a touching homage to legendary former Australia skipper Tim Cahill’s iconic goal celebration.

"We knew people would question the lineup," Popovic stated in his post-match press conference. "But we see these young boys train every day.

They have the hunger, and today they proved they belong on the world's biggest stage." Turkey responded with intense offensive pressure, nearly leveling the scoreline just three minutes later when Abdulkerim Bardakcı unleashed a thunderous long-range rocket.

However, Beach made a miraculous fingertip save to deflect the ball onto the post. The young keeper continued his flawless form into the second half, turning away a dangerous Güler free-kick in the 57th minute.

With Turkey throwing bodies forward, Australia capitalized on the counter-attack to put the match completely out of reach in the 75th minute. Midfielder Connor Metcalfe picked up a loose ball in the center circle, drove into open space unchallenged, and unleashed a magnificent 25-yard bullet into the back of the net.

The historic victory places Australia level on three points with the United States at the top of Group D, setting up a massive heavyweight clash between the two sides in Seattle this coming Friday.
