The United Nations has raised fresh concerns over Nigeria’s worsening food crisis, warning that about 35 million Nigerians could face acute hunger between June and August 2026 as the lean season approaches.

The United Nations has warned that Nigeria is facing a deepening hunger crisis, with nearly 35 million people expected to experience acute food insecurity during the 2026 lean season.

According to the UN Humanitarian Country Team in New York, the critical period between June and August could leave millions of Nigerians struggling to access adequate food.

The organisation described the situation as one of the largest hunger crises globally, with northern Nigeria expected to bear the heaviest burden.

The United Nations explained that almost one in every seven Nigerians could face severe hunger if urgent interventions are not implemented quickly.

The report further revealed that millions of families may be forced to reduce their daily meals, sell personal belongings, or withdraw their children from school in order to survive the difficult period ahead.

The UN also raised alarm over the condition of children in the affected regions. According to the organisation, an estimated 6.4 million children across North-west and North-east Nigeria are at risk of acute malnutrition this year.

Humanitarian agencies warned that delays in assistance could worsen the already fragile situation and create long-term social and economic consequences for vulnerable communities.

The United Nations appealed for urgent international funding to support humanitarian operations and life-saving food assistance across the country.

The organisation disclosed that the 2026 Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan, valued at 516 million dollars, remains underfunded.

According to available figures, only about 215 million dollars had been received as of May 2026, representing just over 40 percent of the required funding.
