Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced his withdrawal from the All Progressives Congress governorship primary election in the state.
In a statement personally signed by the governor on Wednesday, Fubara explained that the decision came after extensive consultations with his family, political associates, and close allies.
According to him, although the decision was difficult, he remains fully committed to supporting whoever eventually emerges as the governorship candidate of the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
Fubara stated that leadership often requires sacrifice and that personal ambitions must sometimes be set aside for the greater interest of the people.
The governor emphasized that Rivers State is bigger than any individual and insisted that maintaining peace, stability, and unity in the state should remain the top priority at this critical political moment.
He also appreciated his supporters for their loyalty, prayers, and sacrifices throughout the political process, while acknowledging that many people might feel disappointed by his withdrawal from the race.
According to Fubara, his recent silence on political developments in Rivers State was intentional and guided by strategic considerations aimed at protecting the state’s overall interest.
The governor’s withdrawal comes amid increasing political realignments and tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections in Rivers State.
His decision also follows the earlier withdrawal of APC chieftain Tonye Cole from the governorship race. Cole reportedly stated that his own withdrawal was aimed at preserving unity within the party.
