A young South African pharmacist, Nomzila Madinane, has been shot dead in a tragic attack that occurred at her newly opened pharmacy in KwaZulu-Natal.
The incident reportedly happened on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at the pharmacy located in Inchanga, near Hillcrest in South Africa.
According to reports, the deadly attack also claimed the lives of a cashier and a security guard who attempted to intervene during the shooting.
Nomzila Madinane had only recently opened the pharmacy after identifying the need for improved healthcare access in the KwaNyuswa community, where many residents were reportedly forced to travel long distances to obtain medication and medical services.
Residents described the late pharmacist as a passionate young entrepreneur who was committed to helping her community through affordable and accessible healthcare.
KwaZulu-Natal police confirmed that three murder cases have been opened following the deadly attack. Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda explained that unknown armed men stormed the pharmacy and opened fire on the victims.
According to the police, Madinane and the cashier died at the scene, while the security guard sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital before later succumbing to his injuries.
Authorities said the motive behind the attack remains unclear as investigations continue. Security agencies are expected to determine whether the shooting was connected to robbery or another criminal motive.
