Mascot Uzor Kalu has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress governorship race in Abia State ahead of the party’s primary election scheduled for May 21, 2026.
The development came barely a day after the APC cleared him to participate in the governorship primary.
His withdrawal now leaves former Minister of Science and Technology, Chief Henry Ikoh, alongside international businessman Mr Eric Opah, as the remaining aspirants cleared to contest for the APC governorship ticket in Abia State.
Both remaining aspirants are from Abia Central Senatorial District. The Abia APC Publicity Secretary, Comrade Uche Aguoru, confirmed the development and disclosed that Mascot Uzor Kalu communicated his decision through a formal letter addressed to the party chairman.
According to the letter dated May 20, 2026, Kalu explained that his withdrawal followed extensive consultations with his family, friends, and major political stakeholders within the state.
He described the decision as difficult but necessary in order to promote fairness, equity, and unity within the APC in Abia State.
Mascot Kalu also stated that the emergence of his elder brother, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, as the APC senatorial candidate for Abia North influenced his decision to step aside from the governorship contest.
According to him, his withdrawal would create more room for other aspirants to participate freely in the race.
He further argued that Abia Central Senatorial District should be allowed to complete its expected eight-year power rotation arrangement in line with existing political zoning principles in the state.
Despite withdrawing from the race, Mascot Uzor Kalu reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC and urged his supporters to remain committed to the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
