The decision was reached on Saturday during the party’s national convention after delegates adopted a resolution supporting the zoning arrangement.
The motion was reportedly moved by Afam Victor and seconded by Seyi Sowumi. According to the resolution adopted at the convention, the party also reserved its 2031 presidential slot for candidates from northern Nigeria as part of its long-term power rotation strategy.
The NDC presidential ticket zoning is expected to shape political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections, especially following the recent influx of prominent politicians into the party.

Political observers believe the decision could influence alliances and possible presidential ambitions within the opposition camp.
During the same convention, the party also ratified all members of its National Executive Committee after a motion presented by Victor Umeh, the senator representing Anambra Central.
Party leaders said the zoning arrangement reflects the NDC’s commitment to fairness, inclusion, and balanced representation between the northern and southern regions of Nigeria.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress has recently gained national attention following the defection of several prominent political figures from other opposition parties amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
