The university made the clarification in a memo dated Friday, August 14, 2026, and issued to members of the academic community by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Gazie Okpara.
According to the management, the clarification became necessary following reactions on social media linking Professor Nwaeze’s suspension to the ongoing ASUU-ABSU strike.
Professor Nwaeze, a Professor of Economics and Director of Linkages at the university, was suspended in a disciplinary matter that management said is separate from the industrial action.
The university disclosed that an all-professors fact-finding panel had already been constituted to examine the circumstances surrounding the matter.
Management said it is currently awaiting the panel’s report before taking further steps.
“Professor Nwaeze’s suspension, however, has nothing to do with the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Abia State University (ASUU-ABSU),” the memo stated.
The university also reassured members of staff that no employee would be victimised because of participation in the ongoing strike.
“The University community is reassured that Management will not victimize staff on account of strike action,” the statement added.
Management appealed to members of the academic community to remain calm and avoid linking the two developments while the fact-finding process is ongoing.
The clarification comes amid the continuing ASUU-ABSU strike and growing discussions on social media regarding Professor Nwaeze’s suspension.
ABSU management maintained that the disciplinary matter and the industrial action are separate issues and urged the university community to await the outcome of the panel.
The university is expected to make further decisions after receiving and reviewing the findings of the fact-finding panel.
