The ranking places Nigeria behind the United States and Brazil among the countries with the highest estimated number of church buildings globally.
According to the figures, the United States leads the ranking with an estimated 350,000 to 380,000 churches. Brazil follows with approximately 280,000 to 300,000, while Nigeria is listed with more than 100,000 church buildings.
The figures are based on registered churches and are therefore not necessarily a complete count of all places where Christian worship takes place.
House churches and unregistered congregations could mean that the actual numbers are higher in some countries.
Nigeria’s position is largely attributed to its sizeable Christian population and the strong presence of Pentecostal churches across the country. Catholic and mainline Protestant denominations also have significant networks of congregations nationwide.
Russia ranks fourth, with an estimated 90,000 churches. Many of the country’s churches are affiliated with the Russian Orthodox Church. Religious activity increased following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the easing of restrictions on religious practice.
Mexico occupies fifth place with approximately 88,000 churches. The country has a longstanding Catholic tradition alongside growing Evangelical and other Christian communities.
The Philippines ranks sixth, with an estimated 85,000 churches. The predominantly Christian country has a large Catholic population as well as Evangelical and independent Christian groups.
China completes the seven-country ranking with more than 70,000 churches. However, the figure refers primarily to registered places of worship, meaning the number could be significantly higher when house churches and other unregistered congregations are considered.

StatiSense, however, noted that the figures are estimates of registered church buildings and should not be regarded as an official worldwide census.
