Tragedy as Abducted Major General Rabe Abubakar Dies in Captivity

Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a highly respected former Director of Defence Information, has tragically passed away while being held hostage by gunmen. 

The senior military officer died exactly two weeks after he and his wife were violently abducted from their residence in Katsina State. 

The shocking development has sent waves of grief across Nigeria’s defense community, highlighting the ongoing security threats posed by armed bandits in the northwestern region. 

The Katsina State Government formally confirmed the heartbreaking news on Saturday, revealing that the retired general did not survive the harsh conditions of his environment. 

According to state officials, medical assessments indicate that Major General Rabe Abubakar dies in captivity due to severe, unmanaged medical complications arising directly from long-standing battles with diabetes and hypertension. 

In a formal press statement, the state's Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, lamented the tragic outcome, emphasizing that the loss occurred despite intense, behind-the-scenes tactical efforts by security forces to locate the couple and negotiate their safe release. 

“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity. Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various Security Agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” Mu’azu stated. 

“The deceased Retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension.” The commissioner extended his sympathies to the immediate family, adding that the tragedy is a monumental blow to the entire federation given Abubakar's years of dedicated service as the chief spokesperson for the Nigerian Armed Forces. 

Reacting to the news, the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, expressed deep sorrow, describing the general’s passing as a "dark moment" for the nation. 

Governor Radda noted that the fact that Major General Rabe Abubakar dies in captivity serves as a stark, painful reminder for all tiers of government to intensify a unified front against the criminal elements holding local communities hostage. 

Security agencies are reportedly continuing operations in the area, as the status of the late general's wife remains a matter of critical concern.
