Iran's state television has announced the official schedule for the multi-day funeral procession and final burial of the country’s late supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.

The clerical leader, who governed the Islamic Republic with an iron fist for nearly 37 years, was killed alongside several top-ranking government and military officials during targeted joint Israeli and United States airstrikes on February 28.

According to official broadcasts on Saturday, Khamenei will finally be laid to rest on July 9. The final burial will take place in his northeastern hometown, the highly revered holy Shia city of Mashhad.

The interment was originally slated to occur immediately following the February strikes but faced indefinite delays due to the escalating region-wide war. The state-mandated ceremonies will officially kick off on July 4 with three days of public mourning and funeral services across the capital city of Tehran.

Final Burial in Mashhad
July 9, 2026

The official state funeral concludes with the final interment ceremonies at his historic hometown in the northeastern holy city of Mashhad.

The geopolitically symbolic start date of the national mourning period on July 4 directly coincides with the United States' landmark 250th Independence Day anniversary.

Following the sudden vacuum of power left by the strikes, Ali Khamenei's son, Mojtaba Khamenei, quickly assumed the mantle of leadership in early March, making him only the third supreme leader to rule since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979.

The political transition remains shrouded in intense secrecy. Mojtaba, who was himself reportedly wounded during the devastating joint military strikes that claimed his father's life, has completely vanished from the public eye.

Since his abrupt appointment to the state's highest office, the new leader has not made a single public or televised appearance, choosing instead to communicate with the nation strictly through written press releases and statements officially attributed to his office by state media channels.
