The Police Command in the Federal Capital Territory has launched a sweeping enforcement operation targeting vehicles with tinted glass, concealed number plates, and improper vehicle registration across Abuja, with Commissioner of Police Ahmed Sanusi warning that such vehicles have become a cover of choice for criminals carrying out kidnappings, one-chance robberies, and other violent crimes against FCT residents.
Sanusi announced the operation during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, June 5, describing it as a necessary and proactive response to the rising tide of criminal activity facilitated by unidentifiable vehicles on the territory's roads.
According to the commissioner, vehicles operating in violation of tinted glass regulations, concealing their number plates, or running without proper registration have repeatedly been linked to serious criminal offences because they allow suspects to hide their identities, evade security cameras, and flee crime scenes without being traced.
He made clear that the command would no longer tolerate the exploitation of these loopholes at the expense of innocent citizens.
"It is to deny criminals the cover they exploit to perpetrate crimes against innocent citizens and FCT residents," Sanusi stated.
Sanusi was also careful to draw a distinction between genuine offenders and law-abiding motorists who have obtained legitimate government approval to use tinted glass on their vehicles.
He clarified that the enforcement operation is not designed to harass compliant road users but to specifically target those flouting the regulations without authorisation.
Since the commencement of the exercise, more than 30 vehicles have already been impounded for violations spanning illegal tinting, concealed number plates, and lack of proper registration documentation.

Owners and operators of the seized vehicles are to be prosecuted under the laws of the Federation and the FCT Road Transport Regulations 2023, with the command making clear that no leniency will be extended to those found in clear breach of the rules.
The FCT Police Commissioner reaffirmed the command's broader commitment to intelligence-led policing and proactive crime prevention as the twin pillars of its strategy for safeguarding lives and property across the territory.
The crackdown on tinted glass and concealed number plates forms part of that wider approach — removing the anonymity that emboldens criminal elements operating on Abuja's roads.
Residents of the FCT have been urged to support the operation by cooperating with security agencies, staying vigilant in their communities, and promptly reporting suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities to the nearest police station or through available emergency contact channels.
The commissioner also appealed for public understanding as enforcement operations continue to roll out across the territory in the days and weeks ahead.
