The enforcement exercise, which officially began on June 13, 2026, is part of the government’s broader plan to streamline transport operations, improve safety, and eliminate disorderly motor park activities across Umuahia.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony in Umuahia, the Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, emphasized that the Abia Bus Terminal Relocation initiative is designed to create a more organized and efficient transportation system for residents and visitors.
He warned members of the enforcement team against any form of intimidation, harassment, or brutality while carrying out their duties.
According to him, transport operators, drivers, conductors, and park workers deserve to be treated with dignity and respect throughout the exercise.
“I did not ask any of you to intimidate or hurt anyone. We want uniformity and compliance, not conflict,” the commissioner stated.
Ukaegbu further urged all transport operators within Umuahia to cooperate with the government by relocating their operations to the new terminal, describing the move as beneficial for both operators and commuters.
The Abia Bus Terminal Relocation project is expected to improve traffic management, enhance passenger safety, and create a more structured environment for public transportation activities within the city.
Responding on behalf of the enforcement team, Chairman Uchenna Umekwe thanked the state government for the opportunity to serve and assured residents that the team would carry out its responsibilities professionally and within the boundaries of the law.
He pledged that members of the team would uphold the objectives of the exercise and work toward ensuring a smooth transition for transport operators moving into the new terminal.
The relocation effort marks another step in the state government’s ongoing drive to modernize transportation infrastructure and improve service delivery across Abia State.
