Trump Withdraws 5,000 Troops from Germany as Iran War Rift Deepens

Donald Trump withdraws 5,000 troops from Germany in a move that underscores growing tensions between the United States and Europe over the ongoing Iran war.

The Pentagon confirmed the decision on Friday, stating that the withdrawal will be implemented over the next six to 12 months.

The development follows a heated exchange between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had criticized Washington’s approach to the Iran conflict.

Merz argued that Iran appeared to be gaining the upper hand in negotiations and questioned the United States’ overall strategy, comments that drew a sharp response from the US president.

According to Pentagon officials, the troop reduction is part of a broader reassessment of America’s military commitments in Europe. Germany currently hosts approximately 35,000 US troops, making it the largest American military hub on the continent. The latest move will bring troop levels closer to what they were before the 2022 escalation triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war.
Officials familiar with the decision described recent remarks from German leadership as “unhelpful,” suggesting that diplomatic tensions played a role in accelerating the withdrawal plan.

Trump, who has long pushed for European allies to take greater responsibility for their own defense, has repeatedly criticized NATO members for what he sees as insufficient contributions to collective security. The decision to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany is also being framed within the administration’s broader strategy to shift security responsibilities toward European nations.

While the United States remains committed to NATO, the move signals a recalibration of its role within the alliance. Security analysts say the development could have far-reaching implications for transatlantic relations, especially as geopolitical tensions remain high.

The Iran war has already exposed divisions between Washington and its European partners, and this latest action may deepen those cracks. Despite concerns, US officials insist the withdrawal does not signal a complete disengagement from Europe but rather a strategic adjustment aimed at long-term stability.
