The Kenneth Okonkwo Peter Obi primaries claim has added a new twist to Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, following remarks by Kenneth Okonkwo during a televised interview.
Speaking on ARISE News, Okonkwo alleged that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi deliberately avoids participating in open and competitive primary elections, suggesting that his political strategy is shaped by a reluctance to face such contests.
According to Okonkwo, Obi’s recent departure from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was not primarily due to internal party crises or ideological differences, but rather his unwillingness to engage in party primaries.
“Peter Obi is afraid of free and fair primary elections,” Okonkwo said, adding that the reasons publicly given for his exit may not reflect the full picture. He further claimed that Obi has historically relied on political negotiations and internal arrangements rather than contesting primaries, citing his political trajectory as an example.
Okonkwo also referenced Obi’s emergence as governor under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), alleging that the process involved circumstances where initial outcomes were later altered.

The Kenneth Okonkwo Peter Obi primaries claim comes amid ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition politics, with several prominent figures changing party affiliations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
While Obi has yet to respond directly to these specific allegations, he previously stated that his political decisions are driven by a desire to promote national development rather than personal ambition.
Analysts say the latest comments could further intensify debates within opposition circles, especially as political actors reposition themselves in preparation for future elections.
