The Abia Sea Port project is gaining momentum after Governor Alex Otti granted approval for an accelerated feasibility study on the proposed Azumini–Obeaku Sea Port and Inland Waterways Corridor.
The approval came after a high-level meeting with a delegation from China Harbour Engineering Company Limited, led by Mr. Nicolas Liu, where both parties discussed the technical and economic prospects of the project.
According to the governor, the feasibility study will be fast-tracked beyond the initially proposed six to seven months, with a directive for a shorter completion timeline to speed up project execution.
He emphasised the need for urgency in delivering infrastructure capable of transforming the state’s economic landscape.
In addition to the study, the state government has commenced steps to secure necessary approvals from key federal agencies, including the Nigerian Ports Authority and the Federal Ministry of Blue Economy, as well as clearance from the Presidency.

Governor Otti also encouraged the engineering team to conduct on-site inspections of the proposed location, highlighting its strategic proximity to the high sea. He noted that technical requirements such as dredging and water depth assessment would be critical to determining the viability of the port.
The Abia Sea Port project is expected to open up inland waterways, improve cargo movement, and position Abia State as a key player in Nigeria’s maritime sector. Analysts believe the project could reduce congestion at existing ports while boosting regional trade and industrial growth.
If successfully implemented, the Azumini–Obeaku corridor could serve as a major economic hub, attracting investment, creating jobs, and enhancing connectivity between southeastern Nigeria and international markets.
Governor Otti expressed optimism about the collaboration, thanking the delegation for their presentation and reaffirming the state’s commitment to turning the vision into reality through strong partnerships and sustainable funding.
