The incident occurred Saturday night near the venue of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, forcing an emergency evacuation of top U.S. officials, journalists, and dignitaries.
According to Trump, the suspect managed to “charge past a security checkpoint” while heavily armed, triggering panic among attendees and a swift response from law enforcement.
The situation escalated quickly as gunfire was reported near the main screening area.
Security operatives, including the Secret Service, reacted immediately, subduing and arresting the suspect before further damage could be done. Trump confirmed that one law enforcement officer was shot during the confrontation, but the officer’s protective vest prevented fatal injuries.
“It could have been a very tragic night,” Trump said, praising the rapid intervention of security personnel. “Our security personnel acted with speed, courage and professionalism.”
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting has intensified debate over security protocols at high-profile events in Washington, especially those attended by senior government officials and international guests.
Despite the breach, authorities confirmed that Trump, the First Lady, Vice President, and other key figures were safely evacuated without harm.
Investigations are ongoing, with officials treating the suspect as a lone actor.
The motive behind the attack has not yet been fully established, but authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
This latest security scare underscores growing concerns about vulnerabilities at major public gatherings, even with heightened protection measures in place.
