A shooting near the White House Correspondents’ Dinner triggered a major security response, forcing the evacuation of Donald Trump and other top officials, authorities confirmed late Saturday.

The incident occurred outside the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., close to the main security screening area for the high-profile event.

According to law enforcement officials, a gunman breached security perimeters and opened fire, causing panic among attendees and prompting an immediate response from security agencies.

The suspect was identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from California. Police said officers engaged the suspect in an exchange of gunfire before he was taken into custody.

Authorities later confirmed he had been hospitalized, although details about his condition remain unclear. Officials revealed that the suspect was heavily armed, carrying a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives at the time of the attack.

Preliminary findings suggest he may have been a guest at the hotel where the dinner was being held. The United States Secret Service confirmed that the shooting took place outside the main ballroom and not within the event itself.

The agency said all protectees, including the president and senior government officials, were safely evacuated, while security teams sealed off the venue to prevent further risk.

President Trump later addressed the situation, stating that he was not in immediate proximity to the shooting and that swift action by security personnel ensured the safety of everyone inside. He described the suspect as a “lone wolf,” adding that investigations are ongoing.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser also confirmed that the suspect is in custody and that there is currently no ongoing threat to the public.

Law enforcement agencies believe the attacker acted alone and had not previously been on their radar. During the chaos, one law enforcement officer was struck in the vest and taken to hospital for treatment.
Authorities later clarified that no guests at the dinner sustained injuries.

Eyewitness accounts described scenes of confusion and fear as gunshots rang out. Some attendees reportedly took cover under tables while security personnel rushed into the area.

Journalists present at the event said they heard multiple shots fired before being instructed to move to safety.
The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which gathers political leaders, journalists, and celebrities, was ultimately called off following the incident. Officials confirmed it would be rescheduled within 30 days.

The shooting has renewed concerns about security at high-profile public events in the United States, particularly given the historical significance of the venue.

The Washington Hilton was also the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on former President Ronald Reagan. Authorities say investigations are ongoing as they work to determine the motive behind the attack and assess any potential security lapses.
