Real Madrid suffered their first La Liga defeat of the season on Friday after Troy Parrott scored late to give Real Betis a 1-0 victory, while Kylian Mbappe missed a stoppage-time penalty for the visitors.
Madrid had won their opening three league matches under Jose Mourinho, but their perfect start came to an end at La Cartuja as Betis produced a disciplined defensive display and claimed all three points.
Real Madrid created several opportunities in the first half but struggled to find a way through the Betis defence. Vinicius Junior came closest when his effort from an Arda Guler pass struck the post.
Mbappe was also denied twice as Natan and Marc Bartra made important blocks to keep the score level.
Betis eventually found the breakthrough with nine minutes of normal time remaining. Thibaut Courtois made an excellent save to deny Nelson Deossa’s header, but the rebound fell to Parrott, who reacted quickly to fire the ball into the net.
The goal was Parrott’s first for Real Betis and gave the hosts a valuable lead against the Spanish giants.
Real Madrid thought they had found an equaliser when Carlos Espi produced an impressive acrobatic finish from a Vinicius cross. However, the goal was ruled out for offside during the build-up.
Mbappe then came close to scoring when his delicate effort clipped the crossbar before Madrid were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time following Natan’s late challenge on Vinicius.
The French forward stepped up to take responsibility from the spot, but Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles produced a decisive save to preserve his side’s lead and secure a memorable victory.
The defeat leaves Real Madrid on nine points from four matches, level with Real Betis, while the result gives Betis a major boost ahead of their return to Champions League football.
