The unexpected decision brings an end to a 12-year presence in the country, where the platform first pioneered on-demand app-based transportation in Lagos back in 2014.
In an official statement sent to users and partners on Wednesday, the company explained that the wind-down comes following a comprehensive strategic review of its business performance across the region.
Expressing gratitude to millions of riders and independent drivers who relied on the platform for daily commutes and earnings, the company offered a sincere apology for the sudden disruption to local transportation routines.
As Uber exits Nigeria operations, both daily commuters and thousands of registered drivers are navigating a sudden shift in the local mobility market.
During its 12-year tenure, Uber helped establish the foundation of modern e-hailing in major commercial hubs, creating vital earning opportunities while changing urban mobility for residents.
The company confirmed that while active ride requests cease on September 2, dedicated customer support channels will remain accessible through its in-app help center until September 23 to resolve outstanding account queries, fare balances, and driver payment settlements.
The departure leaves a competitive space open for existing market rivals and emerging local alternatives as the market adjusts to the pioneer's exit.
