FBI Submits Tinubu Drug Records to U.S. Judge in Secret Hand Delivery

In a highly anticipated legal development, the FBI submits Tinubu drug records to Judge Beryl Howell of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in a confidential, hand-delivered submission. 

The documents, which detail President Bola Tinubu’s 1993 drug-trafficking and money-laundering case, were presented strictly for the judge's eyes only. 

According to recent court filings, the federal agency secretly submitted the sensitive materials as "under seal, ex parte, in camera declarations" on Friday, August 28, 2026, effectively complying with a court ultimatum while completely sidelining transparency campaigner Aaron Greenspan. 

Greenspan, who collaborated with Nigerian journalist David Hundeyin, originally petitioned the Bureau for these very records in a 2023 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit.

The decision to review the files in private comes after Judge Howell reportedly lost patience with the bureau over several missed deadlines and ongoing excuses regarding its failure to produce the files. 

Giving the agency an August 28 deadline as a final ultimatum, the judge forced the FBI’s hand, resulting in the secret submission. 

Earlier this week, the FBI argued that publicly submitting the records would violate the Nigerian leader’s privacy, emphasizing that the FOIA was designed to monitor government operations rather than scrutinize private individuals. 

By ensuring the FBI submits Tinubu drug records securely and directly to the judge, the agency avoided disobeying a federal court order while still protecting the controversial documents from immediate public disclosure.

For decades, the Nigerian president has maintained a strict silence regarding the 1993 drug affair, consistently refusing to clarify the controversies surrounding a case that culminated in his forfeiture of hundreds of thousands of dollars to the U.S. government. 

He previously sought to block the release of these files by asserting that political rivals simply wanted to weaponize the documents to discredit him during a presidential election, begging the court to protect his privacy rights. 

Although the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois released some documents in 2023 detailing his past encounter with American authorities over narcotics and money-laundering allegations, this latest FOIA battle continues to captivate public interest. 

Now that the FBI submits Tinubu drug records for Judge Howell’s private review, the court will carefully evaluate the agency's arguments to determine whether any portion of the highly sensitive material will ever be lawfully released to the public.
