Datti Baba-Ahmed, the former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, has said Peter Obi and other politicians challenging President Bola Tinubu cannot fix Nigeria because some of them were previously involved in political parties that governed the country.
Baba-Ahmed made the statement during an appearance on the Mic On Podcast on Saturday, where he was asked what advice he would give President Tinubu.
He said Tinubu should prepare to leave office but argued that Nigerians should not expect those currently contesting against him to provide the solution to the country’s problems.
Baba-Ahmed specifically referenced Peter Obi, his former political ally and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.
Baba-Ahmed made the statement during an appearance on the Mic On Podcast on Saturday, where he was asked what advice he would give President Tinubu.
He said Tinubu should prepare to leave office but argued that Nigerians should not expect those currently contesting against him to provide the solution to the country’s problems.
Baba-Ahmed specifically referenced Peter Obi, his former political ally and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.
According to him, Obi had previously been a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which governed Nigeria for 16 consecutive years between 1999 and 2015.
He argued that several politicians seeking to replace Tinubu had, at different times, been associated with political parties that contributed to the country’s current situation.
“None of them will improve Nigeria,” Baba-Ahmed said, while noting that he had never been a member of a ruling party.
He explained that although he was a member of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), the party was an opposition party and he never held an All Progressives Congress (APC) membership card.
When asked whether he missed Peter Obi, Baba-Ahmed said he missed him to an extent but claimed that what he truly missed was a better Nigeria.
“It is a shame that Peter Obi was drawn in,” he added, referring to Obi’s involvement in the political coalition.
Baba-Ahmed and Obi were the Labour Party’s presidential and vice-presidential candidates respectively in the 2023 election, where they campaigned on a platform focused on changing Nigeria’s political direction.
