According to Jerry Eze, he came from a background where anger was not commonly expressed, but found himself in a marriage where his wife struggled with anger.
He recalled an incident during the first week of their marriage when a disagreement in the kitchen escalated. He said his wife moved cups and plates with one hand, causing them to fall and break, an experience that left him shocked.
The pastor said he eventually packed his belongings and left the house because he feared the situation could escalate further.
He explained that similar incidents continued for some time, making it difficult for him to communicate freely without worrying about how his wife might react.
Jerry Eze also recalled an incident during a trip to London when another disagreement led to his wife returning home without him. He said he eventually found his way back, packed his belongings, changed his ticket and left that night.
The pastor said the challenges eventually became so difficult that he prayed and told God he wanted the marriage to end.
However, according to his account, his perspective changed after what he described as a message from God during prayer.
He said he understood that marriage is not a destination but an assignment, and that this realisation changed the way he approached his relationship.
Rather than focusing primarily on what he expected to receive from his marriage or how his wife should behave, Jerry Eze said he began concentrating on his own responsibilities, including showing love, controlling his reactions and refusing to respond to anger with anger.
He acknowledged that the transformation was not immediate and that the marriage did not suddenly become perfect.
However, he said his wife has since become one of the sweetest people he knows and attributed the change in their relationship to a shift in his mindset and approach to marriage.
Reflecting on the experience, the pastor encouraged couples to view marriage as an assignment that requires responsibility, patience and personal growth.
He compared different marriages to different types of assignments, noting that while some couples may face relatively simple challenges, others may encounter more difficult situations.
