Nigerian Woman Denounces Feminism, Declares Herself Pick Me

A Nigerian woman identified as Sonia Chisom Chukwu has gone viral after publicly declaring that she is denouncing feminism and describing herself as a proud pick me woman — a term often used critically in online spaces but which she has chosen to embrace openly and without apology.

She acknowledged that her own anger at men stemmed partly from her biological father’s absence during a near-fatal illness in 2018, but said she has since recognised that the good men in her life — her husband, her foster father, her brother, her godfather, and strangers who showed up when her own father did not — were always more numerous than the narrative she had accepted.

Sonia recounted that when appendicitis ruptured in her stomach in 2018 as she prepared to sit her WAEC exams, it was a series of men who saved her life without hesitation. 

The principal of her school paid her hospital bills and her exam fees. The surgeon who operated on her spoke to her and her mother with calm, deliberate kindness and waived some costs when he saw their circumstances. 

A man named Mr. Arthur Iloh carried her on his back in the middle of the night when she could not walk, stayed at the hospital until she was discharged, and then took them home. 

She said that while she was consumed by anger at her absent father, she had failed to count the men who were physically present, financially generous, and emotionally available during the worst night of her young life. 

That realisation, she explained, is what broke the ideology she had previously held.

Sonia made a broader argument directed at women who share her earlier perspective, urging them to redirect their energy from gender conflict toward the actual sources of harm in society — corruption, bad leadership, insecurity, and hunger — and toward bad individuals of both sexes rather than men as a category. 

She noted that women have also been found guilty of violence, abuse, and exploitation, and questioned what the elimination of men would mean for sons, brothers, and fathers who had done nothing wrong. 

She also addressed domestic contributions — cooking, cleaning, and supporting a husband — framing them not as submission or weakness but as participation in a shared life between two people who are differently rather than unequally abled.

The post has drawn a wide and divided response. Supporters have praised her honesty and the personal vulnerability behind her testimony. 

Critics have questioned whether her framework dismisses structural issues that feminism addresses beyond personal grievances.
