Abia Bans Keke on Umuahia to Ohafia and Arochukwu Routes

The Abia State Government has ordered an immediate halt to tricycle operations on a number of key intercity routes, directing all Keke operators to stop running from Umuahia to Obowu, Owerri, Ohafia, and Arochukwu with effect from the date of the announcement. 

The directive was communicated through an official statement by the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, who said the measure was driven by the government’s commitment to restoring sanity, order, and safety on roads that have increasingly been used by tricycles operating beyond their appropriate service areas.

Dr. Ukaegbu made clear that the ban was not advisory but enforceable, warning that any Keke operator found violating the directive after its announcement would face arrest and have their tricycle impounded without exception. 

The firmness of the warning signals that the Abia State Government intends to implement the restriction immediately and without a grace period that could allow continued non-compliance on the affected routes. 

The directive applies across the listed destinations, which together cover several of Abia’s major road corridors connecting the state capital to significant population centres in the surrounding local government areas.

The announcement reflects a broader pattern of transport regulation activity by the Alex Otti administration, which has made road safety and urban order central planks of its governance agenda since coming to power. 

Tricycles have long operated on routes that were never formally designated for them, and the absence of enforcement in previous administrations allowed the practice to expand beyond manageable limits. 

The government’s directive signals its intent to address that drift directly and to establish clear boundaries between the short-distance intra-city service tricycles were designed to provide and the longer intercity routes where safety risks are considerably higher.

The public and all Keke operators along the affected corridors have been urged to comply with the directive immediately. 

For commuters who currently rely on tricycles to travel between Umuahia and the listed destinations, the ban will require a shift to alternative transportation options along those routes.
