Candidates contesting Nigeria's 2027 general elections could spend up to N571 billion collectively following new statutory campaign expenditure thresholds established under Section 92 of the Electoral Act 2026, according to updates published on the INEC Official Portal.

The figure reflects maximum permissible limits across 19 presidential candidates (N190bn total) and 127 governorship candidates running across 28 states (N381bn total).

Candidates who knowingly exceed prescribed thresholds face statutory sanctions, including fines equal to 1% of the permitted limit, up to 12 months imprisonment, or both. 

To maintain regulatory oversight, the commission provides tools like the INEC Campaign Finance Tracking Portal and has outlined compliance measures in the INEC Party Regulations Announcement.

Civil Society Advocacy: Representatives from CISLAC, CACOL, and ActionAid Nigeria noted that effective enforcement requires multi-agency cooperation to audit media advertisements, digital campaigns, and billboard costs to prevent financial influence from distorting electoral fairness.

NBC Media Regulations: The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) warned broadcast stations, online publishers, and bloggers against disseminating unverified assertions, inflammatory content, or unofficial election projections during the campaign cycle.
