A tragic Ogun road crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has claimed the lives of 10 people and left six others injured, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The fatal accident occurred on Sunday night at Saapade Bridge, involving a white Sinotruk (CNHTC) truck and a white Toyota Hiace bus.

The Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC confirmed that the crash happened at about 8:05 p.m. and involved a total of 18 people, including 15 adult males, two adult females, and one male child.

According to the FRSC spokesperson, Afolabi Odunsi, 10 people lost their lives in the accident. The victims included nine adult males and one male child, while six others sustained varying degrees of injuries. Two adult males escaped without injuries.

Preliminary findings by the FRSC revealed that the crash was caused by a combination of speeding, wrongful overtaking, and dangerous driving.

The agency explained that the truck driver reportedly reversed on the highway after missing his route. As the truck reversed, the approaching Toyota Hiace bus, which was travelling at high speed, attempted to pass through the narrow space but crashed into the truck.

FRSC rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene and evacuated the injured victims to Victory Hospital in Ogere for medical treatment. The bodies of the deceased were taken to FOS Mortuary in Ipara.

The crashed vehicles have since been handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force, Ishara Division, while arrangements were made to remove the wreckage from the road. Traffic flow on the expressway has been restored.

Reacting to the incident, Ogun FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished those receiving treatment a speedy recovery.

He also urged motorists, especially commercial drivers and truck operators, to avoid reversing on highways, excessive speeding, dangerous driving, and wrongful overtaking.

The FRSC reiterated that road users should obey traffic regulations, maintain safe driving speeds, and use designated turning points whenever they miss their routes.

According to the agency, following these basic safety measures can significantly reduce the number of fatal accidents on Nigerian highways.
