Russian Missile Strike on Kyiv Kills 14 Ahead of NATO Summit

A Russian missile strike on Kyiv has killed at least 14 people and injured dozens more after missiles and drones hit residential areas in Ukraine's capital ahead of a crucial NATO summit.

The latest Russian missile strike on Kyiv occurred overnight into Monday, marking the second major assault on the Ukrainian capital within a week and prompting renewed calls from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for stronger international support to bolster the country's air defence systems.

According to Ukrainian authorities, Russian forces launched 68 missiles and 351 attack drones during the assault, targeting Kyiv and several other regions across the country.

One of the missiles slammed into a multi-storey apartment building, leaving a massive crater and tearing through the upper floors of the residential complex.

Residents reported hearing numerous explosions throughout the night as air raid sirens sounded across the capital.

Emergency services said around 60 people were injured, while rescue workers continued searching through the rubble for possible survivors hours after the attack.

Authorities in Vyshneve, a suburb of Kyiv, also evacuated residents due to concerns that unexploded munitions remained scattered around the affected area.

Speaking after the attack, President Zelensky urged NATO allies to strengthen Ukraine's air defence capabilities during the alliance's summit in Ankara.

He stressed that additional interceptor missiles for the US-made Patriot air defence systems were urgently needed to counter Russia's ballistic missile attacks.

"It is critically important that the world, first and foremost the United States and our European partners, come out of the NATO Summit with strong decisions in support of our air defence and the protection of ordinary people," Zelensky said.

The European Union also backed Ukraine's request for additional air defence systems.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the latest attack as another reminder that Ukraine urgently requires stronger protection against continued Russian missile assaults.

Russia's Defence Ministry confirmed carrying out what it described as a "massive strike" using missiles and drones against military-industrial facilities and energy infrastructure across several Ukrainian regions.

However, Ukrainian officials said approximately 30 residential buildings in Kyiv were damaged during the attack.

The Ukrainian military stated that while many drones and cruise missiles were intercepted, a shortage of interceptor missiles limited its ability to stop incoming ballistic missiles.

Meanwhile, Russia claimed its air defence systems shot down more than 500 Ukrainian drones overnight.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said several waves of drones had been directed toward the Russian capital before being intercepted.

Ukraine has stepped up drone attacks on energy facilities inside Russia in recent weeks as part of efforts to disrupt Moscow's military logistics and fuel supplies.

The latest escalation comes after another deadly Russian attack on Kyiv just days earlier claimed more than 30 lives, including entire families.

Diplomatic efforts to end the more than four-year conflict have so far failed to produce a breakthrough.

The White House confirmed that US President Donald Trump is expected to meet President Zelensky during the NATO summit to discuss possible steps toward ending the war before later speaking with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, the Kremlin has maintained its position on territorial and political demands, while fighting continues along the eastern front.

Russia recently claimed to have captured the strategic town of Kostyantynivka, although Ukrainian officials insist their forces are still defending the area.
