Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez has revealed that he considered retiring from football after suffering a serious ACL injury last year, describing the difficult period as the lowest point of his career.
Speaking about his recovery, Lisandro Martínez considered retiring because he felt exhausted after battling several injuries over the years, including a fractured fifth metatarsal before sustaining the devastating knee injury.
The Argentine international admitted that the ACL injury affected him mentally and emotionally more than any setback he had previously experienced.
“I just didn’t want to suffer anymore,” Martínez said, explaining that the injury left him questioning whether he should continue playing professional football.
However, the defender revealed that the birth of his daughter completely changed his outlook on life and gave him a renewed determination to keep fighting.
According to Martínez, watching his wife go through childbirth made him realise the strength and resilience required to overcome life’s toughest challenges.
He said the experience inspired him to push through his own struggles instead of giving up on his football career.
Reflecting on that period, the Manchester United defender admitted that thinking about everything he endured during his rehabilitation still brings him close to tears.
Martínez credited both his wife and daughter with helping him regain perspective and reminding him that there was much more to fight for beyond football.
The World Cup winner also revealed that Lionel Messi played a significant role in motivating him throughout his recovery.
He said he constantly thought about Argentina’s captain whenever he felt like giving up, using Messi’s dedication and passion as a source of inspiration.
Martínez praised Messi for continuing to compete at the highest level despite already winning virtually every major trophy in football.
According to him, Messi’s relentless commitment to the game shows why he is regarded as one of the greatest athletes of all time.
The defender described the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner as not only the greatest footballer in history but also one of the greatest sportsmen ever.
Martínez added that if Messi can continue to fight with such passion after achieving everything in football, younger players have every reason to keep pushing through difficult moments.
