The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks, giving eligible Nigerians until Friday, July 24, 2026, to register ahead of future elections.

The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

According to the commission, the decision to extend the Continuous Voter Registration exercise followed a review of the ongoing process and feedback from state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

The voter registration exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, was initially scheduled to end on July 10, 2026 but will now continue until July 24, 2026.

INEC said the extension is intended to give more eligible Nigerians who are yet to register the opportunity to be included in the National Register of Voters before upcoming electoral activities.

In addition to extending the registration period, the commission announced the introduction of a self-service online voter registration platform for first-time voters.

The new service will become available from Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through the dedicated portal at cvr.inecnigeria.org.

According to INEC, the online platform will allow eligible Nigerians to initiate and complete their voter registration process, including biometric capture, using compatible personal devices without the need to visit a registration centre.

The commission explained that the system has built-in identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to maintain the credibility, security and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.

INEC also stated that a step-by-step guide will be provided on the registration portal to help applicants complete the process successfully.

The electoral body urged all eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered to take advantage of the extended registration period and the newly introduced online self-service platform.

It reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process, while leveraging technology to improve the experience of citizens participating in Nigeria’s democratic process.

With the new deadline of July 24, 2026, eligible Nigerians now have an additional two weeks to complete their registration and ensure they are eligible to vote in future elections.
