Swedish actor Kjell Nilsson has died at the age of 76, bringing to a close a career best remembered for his unforgettable role as Lord Humungus in the 1981 action classic Mad Max 2 (Mad Max: The Road Warrior).
The news that Kjell Nilsson dies at 76 was confirmed by his family in a statement shared on his official Facebook page. According to the statement, the actor passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 2 in Queensland, Australia, after battling several years of serious health challenges.
Before becoming an actor, Nilsson built a career in weightlifting. He moved to Australia in 1980 to train for the Moscow Olympics, where he met actress Kate Ferguson, who later became his wife. Encouraged by Ferguson, Nilsson returned to Australia and began pursuing a career in acting.
His breakthrough came in 1981 when he portrayed the intimidating gang leader Lord Humungus opposite Mel Gibson in Mad Max 2, a role that earned him lasting recognition among fans of the post-apocalyptic film franchise.
He later appeared in several productions, including The Pirate Movie (1982), Man of Letters (1984) and The Edge of Power (1987).
According to his family, Nilsson had been living with end-stage kidney disease for the past four and a half years and underwent dialysis three times each week.
The family revealed that after carefully considering his condition, he decided to discontinue dialysis, allowing him to spend his final days peacefully with loved ones.
They described his last days as being filled with gratitude, peace, acceptance and joy, adding that he faced the end of his life on his own terms.
The statement also reflected on how Nilsson exceeded medical expectations. Doctors reportedly believed he would not survive beyond his first Christmas following kidney failure in 2022, but he went on to celebrate four more Christmases with family and friends.
His family expressed appreciation to his supporters, saying the love shown by friends, fans, clients and relatives made his life richer and more meaningful.
They also announced that a memorial ceremony will be held in his honour, with details to be released at a later date.
Nilsson's representative, Chris Carbaugh, paid tribute to the late actor, describing him as a kind-hearted individual who inspired many through his work as a weight-training coach.
He also noted that Nilsson deeply appreciated the Mad Max fan community and proudly embraced the role that made him an international cult film icon.
