The Nigerian Senate has approved a ₦50 million donation to support the families of five individuals who lost their lives during the rescue operation that secured the freedom of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.
The decision was reached during plenary on Wednesday, July 15, following a motion presented before lawmakers.
Under the resolution, each of the five affected families will receive ₦10 million, bringing the total donation to ₦50 million.
The approval comes days after security agencies successfully rescued dozens of pupils and teachers who had spent 56 days in captivity following their abduction in Oyo State.
While commending the bravery of the security forces, the Senate acknowledged that the successful operation came at a heavy cost with the loss of security personnel and educators.
The deceased security officers were identified as Lieutenant F. A. Isaac of the Nigerian Army, Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion, Nigerian Army, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force.
The two teachers who lost their lives during the period of captivity were identified as Deacon John Olaleye and Michael Oyedokun.
Speaking during plenary, the Senate President stated that the financial support was intended to honour the sacrifices made by the fallen heroes and provide assistance to their families.
According to him, each bereaved family will receive ₦10 million to support the dependants left behind.
The proposal received unanimous support from senators through a voice vote.
Following the resolution, the Senate leadership was directed to present the donation to the affected families on behalf of the upper legislative chamber.
The donation follows the Senate's earlier commendation of Nigeria's security agencies for their efforts in rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers, describing the operation as a significant achievement despite the tragic loss of lives.
