The Abia environmental sanitation exercise recorded the arrest of 114 people for violating sanitation regulations during the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise held on Saturday in Aba and Umuahia.
The state government also announced plans to establish a Neighbourhood Environmental Watch to strengthen environmental cleanliness across Abia.
According to state officials, 64 sanitation defaulters were arrested in Umuahia. However, nine individuals, including students travelling for lectures and residents on essential duties, were discharged after presenting legitimate reasons, including health-related circumstances. In addition, three offenders were ordered to carry out community service.
In Aba, authorities confirmed that more than 50 environmental sanitation offenders were taken into custody for violating movement restrictions and other sanitation regulations.
Officials described the July environmental sanitation exercise in Abia as successful, noting that residents actively participated by clearing drainage channels, cleaning their surroundings and supporting waste evacuation efforts.
The Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ikechukwu Oriuwa, commended residents for their participation and urged them to maintain clean surroundings beyond the monthly sanitation exercise.
He disclosed that the ministry is considering establishing a Neighbourhood Environmental Watch across the state to sustain improvements in sanitation and environmental management under the administration of Governor Alex Otti.
Ogbonna also advised residents to avoid indiscriminate refuse disposal and emphasised that environmental sanitation remains a major priority for the state government alongside other developmental sectors.
