Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has opened up about his financial journey, stating that his decision to venture into politics negatively impacted his personal wealth despite his achievements in the business world.

Speaking during a public engagement captured in a video that has since circulated online, Obi reflected on his financial status before entering politics and explained how public service changed his economic position.

To illustrate his point, Obi displayed what he described as his American Express Platinum Card and the prestigious American Express Centurion Card, popularly known as the Black Card.

According to him, he was among the select individuals who received the American Express Platinum Card when it was introduced in 1987.

He added that he later obtained the exclusive Centurion Card when it was launched in 1999. Obi explained that he had already built a successful business empire before deciding to pursue a career in politics and public service.

While discussing the impact of politics on his finances, the former governor stated that his wealth declined after entering public office.

However, he stressed that he has no regrets about his decision to serve the public. “In 1987, American Express introduced the Platinum Card for 5,000 people, here is mine.

They later introduced the Black Card (Centurion Card) in 1999 for 1,000 people on the planet, here is mine. I had a viable business and while I don’t regret going into politics, it made me poorer,” Obi said.

The remarks have generated reactions on social media, with supporters pointing to the statement as evidence of personal sacrifice in public service, while critics continue to debate the role of wealth and politics in Nigeria.

Peter Obi remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent political figures and continues to be actively involved in national conversations on governance, economic development and leadership.
