YouTube has revealed that it will soon begin automatically identifying AI-generated videos and adding labels to such content for viewers on the platform.
The Google-owned company made the announcement on Wednesday, explaining that the decision represents a major shift from its previous disclosure system, which depended mainly on creators to reveal whether generative AI tools were used in producing videos.
According to YouTube, its systems will now actively detect significant photorealistic AI-generated content even if creators fail to disclose it themselves.
The company said in a blog post: “If a creator doesn’t specify whether or not they used AI, but our systems detect significant photorealistic AI use, we will now automatically apply a label.”
YouTube first introduced AI disclosure policies in 2024, encouraging creators to identify videos created with generative artificial intelligence tools.
However, rapid advancements in AI technology have made realistic AI-generated content easier to produce.
Popular AI video tools such as Google Veo 3.1 and Seedance are now capable of generating highly realistic videos that can sometimes be difficult for viewers to distinguish from real footage.
The platform added that creators would still have the opportunity to appeal labels if they believe their videos were incorrectly flagged as AI-generated content.
YouTube also clarified that the automatic AI labels would not affect how videos are recommended through its algorithm, reassuring creators that the feature is designed mainly to improve transparency for users rather than reduce visibility.
Other major digital platforms are also taking similar steps as AI-generated media becomes increasingly common online.
Music streaming giant Spotify has already started introducing automatic AI-content labels for certain media uploads.
The move highlights the growing global push among tech companies to ensure viewers can easily identify content created or altered using artificial intelligence.
