United States President Donald Trump has met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing as the United States seeks China’s support in addressing the ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Ahead of the high-stakes summit, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington would encourage China to take a more active diplomatic role in persuading Iran to step back from escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf.
Speaking during an interview aboard Air Force One, Rubio said resolving the conflict is also in China’s interest because of its economic and strategic ties with Iran.
According to Rubio, the U.S. has made it clear that any Chinese support for Iran during the conflict could negatively affect relations between Washington and Beijing.
The Trump Xi Jinping meeting is taking place at a critical time as the war involving Iran enters its third month and continues to impact global politics, oil markets, and economic stability.
Speaking before departing the White House, Trump told reporters that discussions with Xi Jinping would cover several major international issues, including trade, diplomacy, and the Iran conflict.
The U.S. president also stated that China could play an important role because it remains one of the biggest buyers of Iranian oil, giving Beijing considerable influence over Tehran.
Trump said he hopes to convince China to “open up” its economy further while also strengthening trade cooperation between both countries.
The American delegation attending the summit includes Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
Several top business leaders also joined the visit, including Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and NVIDIA boss Jensen Huang.
According to the White House, one of the main goals of the Trump Xi Jinping meeting is securing new purchasing agreements in agriculture, energy, and aerospace sectors.
China’s Foreign Ministry described the summit as important for maintaining stability in China-U.S. relations and promoting cooperation between both global powers.
The diplomatic meeting is expected to continue with a state banquet hosted by Xi Jinping as both nations attempt to manage tensions while expanding economic cooperation.
