Former Abia State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, John Okiyi Kalu, has officially declared interest in the Abia 2027 governorship race, signaling his ambition to lead the state under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Former Abia State Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, popularly known as JOK, has formally declared his intention to contest in the Abia 2027 governorship election.

John Okiyi Kalu, who previously served under former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu as Commissioner for Information before later becoming Commissioner for Trade and Investment, is expected to seek the governorship ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The Abiriba-born politician from Ohafia Local Government Area is believed to be counting on strong grassroots support and increasing backing from young party loyalists across the state as the political race ahead of 2027 begins to gather momentum.

Sources within the party disclosed that John Okiyi Kalu is currently participating in activities connected to the PDP screening process, further confirming his seriousness about the Abia 2027 governorship ambition.

Political observers say the former commissioner is relying heavily on his years of experience in government, media engagement, and investment promotion to position himself as a strong contender within the PDP.

Supporters of the former commissioner have also pointed to his visibility during the previous administration and his relationship with party stakeholders as factors that could strengthen his chances ahead of the party primaries.

The Abia 2027 governorship contest is already attracting attention as several political figures continue consultations and mobilization across different parts of the state.

With John Okiyi Kalu officially entering the race, the competition within the PDP is expected to intensify in the coming months.
