The facility was inaugurated as part of ongoing efforts to build a safer, smarter, and more sustainable transport system.
The government of Abia State has commissioned the newly completed Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia, describing it as a landmark project in the state’s transport modernization drive.
The facility is designed as a multimodal transport hub capable of accommodating over 340 buses at once, aimed at easing congestion and improving passenger movement within the state capital and beyond.
The terminal was named in honour of Prof. Nnenna Nnennaya Oti, recognized for her role and integrity during the 2023 governorship election.
Officials said the naming also serves as a tribute to electoral officials, security agencies, and citizens who upheld democratic values during the election process.
The project integrates sustainable infrastructure and is linked to the state’s expanding electric bus system, with about 20 electric buses already in operation and more expected in the coming weeks.
The state government emphasized that the facility is powered by independent energy and water systems to ensure uninterrupted operations and long-term efficiency.
In a statement titled “Raising the Bar,” the leadership of Abia State said the project reflects a shift away from limited ambitions toward large-scale development that meets modern transportation needs.
The government also commended Planet Projects Limited for delivering the project, alongside the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu, and the transport advisory team for their roles in its execution.
Residents were urged to take ownership of the facility by maintaining cleanliness, preventing vandalism, and supporting its long-term sustainability.
