Generator cabal warning as Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe speaks on Nigeria power reforms and Joseph Tegbe appointment
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Power, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has warned incoming Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, that powerful interests benefiting from Nigeria’s electricity crisis may resist any serious reform in the sector.

The warning came on Wednesday during plenary after the Senate confirmed Tegbe as the new Minister of Power alongside Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, who was cleared as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Speaking during the confirmation session, Abaribe said the so-called “generator cabal” has continued to profit massively from the country’s unstable electricity supply and may push back against any effort aimed at improving power generation and distribution.

According to the senator, Nigeria remains one of the largest markets for electricity generators in the world because millions of citizens rely heavily on alternative power sources due to poor electricity supply.

“The generator cabal will come after you if you attempt to fix power,” Abaribe said while addressing Tegbe during the Senate session.

The senator also criticised electricity distribution companies, accusing them of failing to invest adequately in infrastructure despite acquiring distribution licenses years ago.

He revealed that some communities, including his own village, still lack basic transformers despite repeated complaints to power distribution companies.

Abaribe urged the new minister to ensure that electricity distribution firms comply with the terms of their agreements by expanding infrastructure and improving service delivery across the country.

The lawmaker further referenced the recently signed Electricity Act Amendment, which grants state governments more authority to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity independently.

He warned that the new arrangement could trigger conflicts between federal and state authorities over control of power assets and investments.

Joseph Tegbe’s appointment comes at a critical time as Nigeria continues to battle poor electricity supply, rising energy costs, and increasing public frustration over the country’s struggling power sector.

Many Nigerians are expected to closely watch how the new minister handles the long-standing challenges, especially amid concerns raised about the influence of the “generator cabal” and the poor performance of distribution companies.
