Xenophobic attack FG summons South Africa High Commissioner as tensions rise following reported violence against Nigerians and other foreign nationals in South Africa.

The Federal Government confirmed that it has invited the South African envoy for urgent diplomatic talks in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa has been scheduled to meet with Nigerian officials on Monday, May 4, 2026.

The engagement is aimed at addressing growing concerns over the safety and treatment of Nigerians living in the country.

The Nigerian government said the decision to summon the envoy was driven by reports of ongoing demonstrations and attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians whose businesses and livelihoods have been affected.

Authorities warned that such incidents could strain the long-standing diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and South Africa if not properly addressed.

Ebienfa noted that the meeting would provide an opportunity for Nigeria to formally express its concerns and seek assurances regarding the protection of its citizens abroad.

He added that the Federal Government is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to safeguarding Nigerians wherever they reside. While acknowledging rising public anger over the attacks, the government urged citizens to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

Officials emphasized that diplomatic channels remain the most effective means of resolving the issue. The development highlights renewed concerns about xenophobic violence in South Africa, an issue that has periodically affected relations between the two African nations.

As discussions proceed, attention will be on the outcome of the meeting and any concrete steps taken to ensure the safety of Nigerians and restore confidence in bilateral ties.
