Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has shifted his political focus away from the Abia State governorship race and returned to the House of Representatives contest for Bende Federal Constituency.
The development followed his appearance before the All Progressives Congress screening committee for the House of Representatives primaries, a move that has fueled speculation that he may no longer be pursuing the governorship ambition he had earlier been linked with.
For several months, political discussions in Abia State had centred around expectations that Benjamin Kalu would challenge Governor Alex Otti in the 2027 governorship election.

His latest move has therefore generated widespread reactions among APC supporters, political observers, and stakeholders within Abia State politics.
Many supporters believe the Deputy Speaker’s return to the House of Representatives race could strengthen his influence at the national level, while others argue that it may reshape the political calculations within the APC ahead of the next general elections.
The political development has also intensified conversations about the future of the APC in Abia State and the party’s strategy for the 2027 governorship election.
Although no official statement has confirmed a total withdrawal from the governorship race, his participation in the House of Representatives screening process has been widely interpreted as a major political shift.
