Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed gratitude to members of the African Democratic Congress after emerging as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

In his acceptance speech, Atiku described the victory as a privilege and pledged to lead the party into the next election with dedication and commitment.

He stated that the ADC remains one of the few political parties in Nigeria where democracy is still actively practiced, noting that party members were allowed to freely contest and express their ambitions without intimidation.

The former vice president accused the ruling All Progressives Congress government of suppressing opposition voices and attempting to weaken democracy in Nigeria.

Atiku alleged that opposition parties across the country were facing leadership crises allegedly engineered by the government, the Independent National Electoral Commission, and elements within the judiciary.

He also criticised the detention of Nasir El-Rufai, claiming the former Kaduna governor had remained in detention despite court orders granting him bail.

According to Atiku, opposition politicians are being pressured to join the ruling party through intimidation and harassment by government agencies.

The ADC presidential candidate warned against any attempt to interfere with the affairs of the party, insisting that the coalition was formed through sacrifices and a shared determination to protect Nigeria’s democracy.

Atiku Outlines Plans for Security and Education

Speaking on insecurity, Atiku Abubakar described the current security situation in Nigeria as the worst in the country’s history.

He promised that an ADC-led government would strengthen the armed forces, police, and other security agencies through massive recruitment, improved welfare, training, intelligence sharing, and modern equipment.
