Apple releases iOS 26.5 with encrypted RCS messaging alongside several new features designed to improve privacy, accessibility, and entertainment for iPhone users.

The latest software update, which became available on Monday, introduces cross-platform encrypted messaging between iPhones and Android devices, upgraded Apple Music tools, and improvements to Apple’s Liquid Glass interface.

The new iOS 26.5 update is rolling out to compatible iPhones and iPads through iPadOS 26.5.

According to reports, the software also includes bug fixes, performance improvements, and new personalization features. One of the most talked-about additions in iOS 26.5 is encrypted Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging.

The feature allows iPhone and Android users to exchange end-to-end encrypted messages when using supported carriers and updated messaging apps.

Apple explained that conversations will display a lock icon whenever encryption is active, ensuring that messages remain private while being transmitted between devices.

The encrypted RCS messaging feature in iOS 26.5 marks another major step in Apple’s efforts to strengthen digital privacy while improving communication between different mobile platforms.

Major US carriers including AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile are already supporting the feature. Apple also expanded its Liquid Glass interface with new accessibility settings aimed at users sensitive to motion and bright visual effects.

The updated “Reduce Motion” feature now minimizes animations more effectively, while the “Reduce Bright Effects” option lowers sudden flashes and lighting effects within apps and menus.

The latest update additionally improves keyboard responsiveness for faster typists after complaints about typing accuracy in earlier versions of the operating system.

Beyond messaging and accessibility, Apple introduced several entertainment-focused upgrades through Apple Music. A new Playlist Playground feature can automatically generate playlists from written prompts, while the new Concerts tool recommends live performances based on artists already saved in a user’s library.

Apple also added Offline Music Recognition, allowing users to identify songs without an internet connection and receive the results later once connected again.

A new Ambient Music widget featuring playlists for sleep, wellness, relaxation, and productivity is also part of the update. The iOS 26.5 update further includes new emojis, expanded tools for the Freeform app, enhanced Family Sharing payment options, and smarter recommendations in Apple Maps.

The software release arrives just weeks before Apple is expected to unveil iOS 27 during its annual Worldwide Developers Conference scheduled for June 8.
