Arne Slot Defends Tactics After Liverpool Beaten by PSG in Champions League Clash

Liverpool manager Arne Slot faces mounting pressure after he admitted his side were well beaten by Paris Saint-Germain during Wednesday night’s Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Despite a disappointing 2-0 defeat at the Parc des Princes, Slot remained defiant regarding his tactical choices and insisted that the tie remains alive as the scene shifts back to Anfield for the return leg.

The match was largely one-sided, with goals from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia securing a comfortable lead for the French champions. Statistics painted a grim picture for the traveling Reds; the hosts enjoyed 70 percent possession and unleashed 18 attempts on goal.

"Paris Saint-Germain was by far the better team today and could have scored more than two goals," Slot conceded in his post-match press conference. He noted that his squad was in "survival mode," a reflection of a grueling period in the season that has seen the Reds win only one of their last six fixtures. Being well beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in terms of statistics, however, didn't dampen Slot's praise for his players' fighting spirit.

Tactical Gamble: The Three-Man Defense

One of the biggest talking points was Slot’s decision to start Joe Gomez alongside Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk. This defensive shift was designed to nullify the threat of PSG full-backs Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes.

The Formation: A hybrid system that functioned as a 5-3-2 or a 4-3-3 depending on Milos Kerkez’s positioning.

The Absences: Most notably, Mohamed Salah remained an unused substitute.

The Return: Alexander Isak made a brief cameo, his first appearance since December.

Addressing the Salah benching, Slot explained that the Egyptian’s qualities weren't suited for a match spent "defending in his own box," preferring to save his talisman's energy for the upcoming Premier League clash against Fulham.
Hope Remains for Anfield

While Liverpool were clearly well beaten by Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg, the "Anfield Factor" looms large. Luis Enrique, the PSG coach, acknowledged the difficulty of the return trip, noting that while his side is dominant, playing in Liverpool is "always complicated."

With Liverpool currently sitting fifth in the Premier League, the pressure is on the Dutchman to deliver a historic European comeback next Tuesday. Before that, the Reds must regain their domestic form to keep their Champions League hopes for next season alive.
