Hansi Flick Fumes Over Controversial Handball as Barcelona Fall to Atletico Madrid

In a night marred by officiating controversy, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick was left furious after a strange handball incident went unpunished during his side's 2-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg defeat to Atletico Madrid.

The German tactician slammed the lack of VAR intervention, comparing the situation to previous European precedents and claiming his side was denied a clear path back into the match.

The turning point of the post-match debate centered on a strange handball incident involving Atletico defender Marc Pubill. After receiving a pass from goalkeeper Juan Musso, Pubill appeared to touch the ball with his hand to steady it before taking a goal-kick. Flick argued that since the ball was technically in play, the action should have resulted in a penalty and a red card.

"From my perspective it's clear," Flick told reporters, referencing a 2024 incident where Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings was penalized for a similar mistake. "He has to call and say okay, come on look at this... I don't understand."

VAR Under Fire

Flick’s frustration was compounded by the fact that VAR did intervene earlier in the half to upgrade a yellow card to a red for Barca defender Pau Cubarsi. The dismissal left the Catalans with 10 men for the entire second half, during which Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth secured the win for the visitors.

The Barcelona manager didn't hold back his sarcasm regarding the VAR officials. "The VAR was very focused today for Atletico; he's a German guy, so thanks Germany," the former national team coach remarked.

Common Sense or Clear Rule Break?

While Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo labeled the strange handball incident as "absurd but a clear penalty," Atletico boss Diego Simeone offered a different perspective. Simeone praised the officials for using "common sense," arguing that Pubill was simply preparing to start play and had no intent to gain an unfair advantage.

Despite the 2-0 deficit and the suspension of Cubarsi, Flick remains optimistic about the return leg in Madrid next Tuesday. "We have the quality, the players who can decide this game, and we have to fight," he insisted.
